Four Batteries, One Winner? A Friendly Guide to Prismatic NMC, Cylindrical, Pouch, and LFP
Behind every great EV is a battery cell that made trade-offs. No single cell type is perfect. The question is: which trade-off works for you?
Let's walk through the four main battery personalities powering today's EVs.
1. The All-Rounder: Prismatic NMC
Where you find it: BMW iX, Mercedes EQS, Hyundai Ioniq 5, Ford Mustang Mach-E, most premium EVs.
The good:
- Packs energy like a suitcase – rectangular shape leaves almost no wasted space
- Strong and safe – hard metal case protects against swelling
- Easy to cool – flat surfaces are perfect for liquid cooling plates
- Works in winter – retains 80–90% of range at -20°C
The trade-off:
- Can swell over time (case contains it)
- Heavier per energy unit than pouch cells
- Contains cobalt (costly, ethical concerns)
Verdict: The premium choice for long range and four-season driving.
2. The Rugged Veteran: Cylindrical (e.g., Tesla 4680)
Where you find it: Tesla (18650, 21700, 4680), Rivian, Lucid.
The good:
- Extremely durable – the metal can withstands pressure
- Proven and cheap – billions made for laptops and tools
- Safe failure mode – hot gas can be directed out of the pack
The trade-off:
- Wasted space – round cells leave triangular gaps
- Assembly complexity – a Tesla pack uses over 4,000 cells
- Harder to cool – smaller surface area per volume
Verdict: Rugged and proven, but pack-level efficiency lags behind prismatic.
3. The Lightweight Specialist: Pouch
Where you find it: Some PHEVs (Chevy Volt), early Nissan Leaf, phones, tablets.
The good:
- Lightest option – no heavy metal case
- Shape customizability – fits odd spaces
- Good power density – excellent for acceleration
The trade-off:
- Swelling is real – pouches can puff up like a balloon
- Easily punctured – small defects or debris can be catastrophic
- Thermal runaway spreads fast – neighbors have little protection
Verdict: Light and flexible, but needs excellent mechanical protection.
4. The Budget King: LFP
Where you find it: Tesla Model 3 RWD, BYD Atto 3 (Blade Battery), Ford Mustang Mach-E (standard range), home batteries.
The good:
- Cheap – no cobalt, iron and phosphate are abundant
- Very safe – almost never undergoes thermal runaway
- Long life – 3,000–5,000+ cycles (vs. 1,500–2,000 for NMC)
The trade-off:
- Lower energy density – 15–25% less range per kg or liter
- Poor cold-weather performance – at -20°C, you lose 30–40% of range
Verdict: The smart choice for warm climates, budget EVs, and stationary storage.
